Guide

Writing audit and quality improvement so it counts.

"Completed an audit on antibiotic prescribing" tells a reader the topic. It leaves out your contribution, the findings and what happened next.

What to include in an audit entry

Give the project title, department or hospital and dates, followed by enough detail to show your contribution.

DetailWhat to include
StandardThe guideline or local standard and the criterion audited
ScopeClinical setting, sample size and period covered
Your roleThe parts you undertook, such as designing the data collection, analysing findings or developing an intervention
FindingsThe result against the agreed target, with figures where available
Follow-upPresentation, action taken and any repeat measurement

On a team project, “led the audit” needs some detail about what you led. Equally, a contribution to data collection or analysis can be described in its own right without implying responsibility for the whole project.

Example of an audit on a medical CV

Fictional example. Replace the details with information from your own project.

Before: “Did an audit on antibiotic prescribing.”

Revised entry:

Audit of antibiotic prescribing, General Medicine, Example Hospital, January–February 2025

  • Reviewed 60 consecutive medical admissions started on antibiotics over eight weeks, against trust antimicrobial guidance.
  • Designed the data collection and analysed the results. An indication for antibiotics was documented in 33 of 60 admissions (55%), against a target of 95%.
  • Findings presented at the departmental governance meeting in March 2025 and used to inform a revision of the admission proforma.
  • Re-audit in June 2025: an indication was documented in 43 of 50 admissions started on antibiotics (86%).

Describe the changes tested in a QI project

Audit measures practice against an existing standard. QI tests changes to a process and measures their effect over time.

For QI work, include the problem, the changes tested and how you measured their effect. Name the method you used, with enough detail to show how it informed the work. If you tested successive changes, describe the part you took in those cycles.

Report baseline and subsequent measurements where available. If measurement is still under way, give the current stage of the project.

Fictional example. Replace the details with information from your own project.

Before: “Took part in a QI project on discharge summaries.”

Revised entry:

Quality improvement project: timeliness of discharge summaries, General Surgery, Example Hospital, August 2025–January 2026

  • Measured a baseline of 18 of 40 discharge summaries (45%) completed within 24 hours of discharge.
  • Tested two changes in PDSA cycles: a ward-round prompt sheet, then a daily check with the ward clerk. Collected the data and led the second cycle.
  • Completion within 24 hours rose to 26 of 38 (68%) after the first change and 34 of 42 (81%) after the second. Results presented at the surgical governance meeting in January 2026.

When you left before the repeat cycle

A rotation may end before re-audit or further testing takes place. The CV can record the work completed and the arrangements for follow-up:

“Findings presented to the department in March 2025; a repeat cycle was planned but I rotated before it was completed.”

If colleagues completed the follow-up, include only results you can verify and make clear which stages you worked on.

Choose the projects most relevant to the post

Give more space to work that demonstrates the experience requested in the person specification. A project you led through an intervention and repeat measurement may need a fuller entry than one in which you collected data for a short period. There is no fixed number of lines for either.

For the position of audit and QI within the wider document, see our IMG medical CV guide.

In supporting information, use the project to address the particular criterion, whether that concerns participation, leadership or experience of implementing change. Our NHS supporting information guide explains how to organise that evidence. For help reviewing or editing a vacancy-specific draft, see our NHS and Trac application support.
